Parents have asked that the information and link to a petition being circulated by a parent from Henry Hudson Elementary School in Vancouver below be shared. Please see below.
For more background and context on this topic see a letter sent by the Parent Advisory Network (PAN) to the Federal Government HERE. Hello, You are receiving this note as a PAC representative or school principal of one of the BC schools considered at highest risk of collapse during an earthquake (see full listing of H1 schools at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/administration/resource-management/capital-planning/seismic-mitigation-program). With the recent change of government, new school board trustees (in Vancouver) and the recent earthquake in Mexico, I’ve started a petition calling on the BC government to accelerate seismic upgrades for all high risk BC schools. Now is the time for change! I know that many other PACs, parent and staff organizations have been tirelessly advocating for similar goals and I am asking you to consider circulating this to the parent population at your school. Our PAC has helped to raise awareness by providing the link in their latest parent newsletter and on the PAC website. The petition currently has ~250 signatures, but we are hoping to have many more before presenting it to the BC Minister of Education as a reminder that we continue to monitor and expect progress on this issue. I hope you will join in support of all parents, children and staff in high risk BC schools. Lastly, if your PAC or seismic committee would like stay connected with ours on this issue, please let me know and we’ll keep you informed. We are stronger together. You can read more and sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/the-honourable-rob-fleming-bc-minister-of-education-accelerate-seismic-upgrades-for-high-risk-bc-schools Thanks! Laura MacDougall Henry Hudson parent and Chair, Hudson Seismic Committee
