Unfortunately, the 2015 Budget that was released on February 17 does not fund public education adequately; on the contrary, it makes further cuts to a system that has already been cut time and again. Vancouver DPAC has put out a press release in which it deplores the cuts to education, especially in the context of a huge budget surplus, tax cuts for the wealthiest British Columbians, and increased funding to private schools.

Do you have an extra hour a month?
One of the PAC's major fundraisers is our recycling program. This program depends on the support from the parents to keep it running. We are currently in need of more parent volunteers to help sort the bottle donations. This does not need to be large commitment. Depending on the amount of donations needing to be sorted, it takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Volunteers can come once a week or once a month - whatever works for you. Email Stephanie Kulferst to volunteer or for more information. You can also find more information about our recycling program here. Donations needed for Multicultural Night rafflesCorrection: the previous announcement for this said to contact Naomi, please contact Jodi. If you contact Naomi, it will get to Jodi but the fastest way to go is to contact her directly.
Preparations are currently underway for our annual Multicultural Night. This is a fun time of food, community, and wonderful demonstrations of our cultural diversity. This is also a HUGE fundraiser for the PAC. The primary way this event makes money is from our raffles and 50/50. If you own a business or would like to talk to business owners about donating items for our raffle, please contact Jodi and she will give you the necessary information and documents. Mr. Mitzel shared briefly with us at our last PAC meeting some of the exciting changes that are underway in British Columbia schools. Information can be found at the BC government site dedicated to communicating these changes and providing an opportunity for parents and educators to review them. From Mr. Mitzel: Last week a few of our students on the Livingstone Leadership Team helped spread the word of Acceptance by participating in a video campaign for the Vancouver School Board. This was in preparation for the February 18 event at the PNE and the official Pink Day on Wednesday, February 25. For Pink Day this year, students are preparing a flash mob style dance routine to Pharrell Williams' song, "Happy" to be performed at the Vancouver Giants game on February 18. Ronan is in Grade 6 in Ms. Geri’s class. Every day at 2:20, he leaves his class to go and help the Kindergarteners with their gym time. This arrangement works well for the kids and Ronan as they all enjoy being active, exercising and having a break from the classroom. Ronan takes his leadership very seriously and tries his best to keep an eye on the kids and make sure they play safely. Sometimes the kids like to chase Ronan through the playground trying to tag him. Or, they might play games in the gym. After working with the kindergarteners for the past few months, he has learned a lot about the patience and the attention necessary to get the kids moving while staying safe. Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, it looks like everyone involved is having a great time. Editor's note: Several of our students help younger kids at our school. If you have a story to share about your child, or if you're a student and would like to talk about your experience helping a younger class, please email [email protected]
